The analysis on the pre-existence showed the building volumetric incompatibility with the features of the program. The PMKTL project proposes to demolish the interior of the building, keeping however the outer wall in respect of its historicized relationship with the city, further enhanced by the presence of a twin adjacent building.

The small size of the building suggested the choice of creating a space as flexible as possible. At first, it was thought to use a single beam wedged between the bearing walls, a solution that, however, since the building had to meet a certain height, turned out inadequate. In order to cover that distance, in fact, the beam would be so high as to compromise the usability of the building.

The next hypothesis was to minimize the size of the pillars, to turn them into tie rods, which, reacting only to traction stress, would have required a significantly lower section. To give effect to this solution, the walls were appropriately reinforced, becoming carrier of a reticular system of beams, to which tie rods are suspended, with floors support function. The volume that contains the two new floors, while maintaining its autonomy, establishes a respectful dialogue with the pre-existence, complementing this with extreme sobriety. Form and structure contribute to the same result: to lighten, pare away, and make a few elements essential in a continuous interchange of the parts which reinforces the temporary and floating impression of the project.
