The integration of the project in the urban design and its relation with the castle are two main approaches for the design of the amplification of the music school in Karlsruhe, Germany.
The site is located between two big green areas. The 'green entrance', a public green space, is situated in the north of the site and in the south is situated the Ostauepark. The castle with its surroundings is the connecting piece of these two green areas. A big quality of the space around the castle is its character as a big garden. The space is characterised by dense vegetation with a lot of tall existing trees and green areas. The project should preserve the character of the site as a green space and even enforce it.

The castle Gottesaue is the main building of the site. The new building for the music school should be integrated in the entirety of the castle with the surroundings and preserve the visual relation with the castle. It should not dominate and not compete the castle but extend and complete the site of the castle.
The amplification of the music school is not just a new building but moreover to create a new place full of atmosphere.
The existing green of the site is reinforced and revalued. To reach a certain tree density along the border of the project site, the lot is planted with chestnut trees. In this green density a sober, low building is creating the border of a clearence, a void. The project becomes a piece of sensorial landscape. The four seasons alive the project and characterise the atmosphere of the site.

The four institutes and the functional spaces of the hall build the border, the limit of the void. This space becomes a public garden. A place of exchanges, of public life which is crossed, animated and appropriated. The technical hard and heavy programme, the multifunctional hall and the two rehearsals rooms are situated in a box, an acoustics to respond to the needs of the musicians.

The project design follows the symmetrical implantation of the masterplan and completes it. The historical castle axes has today less relevance in the urban structure then the transversal connection of the project site with the surroundings. The two main entries to the castle site are situated north and south of the castle Gottesause. The project preserves the historical axes without enforcing it. It's more the attitude of remembrance of the historical axe than its putting in scene.

The programme is functionally divided in two parts. The four institutes north of the site and south the multifunctional hall with its belonging functional spaces. Both parts are accessed from a common, covered outdoor space next to the castle. This way, a weather protected connection and a proximity to the castle is given. The entrance hall of the multifunctional hall is directly connected with the main entrance and can be used independently from the other functions.
The rooms of the institutes and the functional rooms belonging to the hall are situated around the public space, the garden, and are delimitating it. They are seen in the idea of an 'exedra', spaces that are opened by a porch to the green public space. A public, covered outside space is created, a space to stay and to relax, a place to meet and of exchanges.
The facade orientated to the garden's is completely out of glass. The building lies harmoniously in the enviroment. The landscape reflects in the facade, the project becomes part of the landscape and disappears in it. What remains visible is a filigree architecture, two plaques and line of pillars. there is no division between inside and outside space the one goes into the other. To create certain privacy inside the building, the facade is made of reflecting glass which permits students to see outside and protects them of views from the outside.
